Jeera Rice

Origin & Story

Jeera rice is the everyday aromatic rice of North India, a simple upgrade on plain boiled rice that pairs with almost any curry or dal.

Main Spices & Their Role

Cumin seeds

Toasted in ghee to perfume every grain of rice.

Bay leaf

Adds a subtle background fragrance.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice, soaked
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 2 cups water
  • Salt
  • Coriander

Method

  1. 01

    Heat ghee and add cumin seeds and bay leaf until fragrant.

  2. 02

    Add the drained rice and toss gently for a minute.

  3. 03

    Pour in water and salt, bring to a boil.

  4. 04

    Cover and simmer on low until fluffy and water is absorbed.

  5. 05

    Fluff with a fork and garnish with coriander.

Veg & Vegan Alternatives

Vegetarian

This dish is already vegetarian.

Vegan

Use oil in place of ghee for a fully vegan jeera rice.
