Aloo Paratha

Whole-wheat flatbread stuffed with spiced mashed potato.

Origin & Story

Aloo paratha is the king of North Indian breakfasts, especially in Punjab, where it is cooked on a hot tawa and served with butter, yoghurt and pickle.

Main Spices & Their Role

Cumin

Warms the potato filling.

Red chilli powder

Adds gentle heat.

Garam masala

Gives the filling fragrant depth.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups wheat flour
  • 3 boiled potatoes, mashed
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp garam masala
  • Ghee or oil
  • Salt
  • Coriander

Method

  1. 01

    Make a soft dough with flour, water and salt; rest 15 min.

  2. 02

    Mix the mashed potato with the spices and coriander.

  3. 03

    Roll a portion of dough, add filling, seal and roll flat.

  4. 04

    Cook on a hot tawa, brushing with ghee, until golden on both sides.

    Serve hot with yoghurt or pickle.

Veg & Vegan Alternatives

Vegetarian

This dish is already vegetarian.

Vegan

Cook with oil instead of ghee and serve with plant-based yoghurt.
